ar.chi.tect (ar'ki-tekt) n.

One who designs and supervises the construction of large structures such as buildings. Ad.i.ron.dack De.sign (ad'e-ron'-dak' di-zin') n.
1. The firm that supervises the construction of the dreams you design.

2. The firm that blends the warmth and ambiance of the Adirondack style with the modern building techniques and energy efficient materials of the present using tomorrow's computer assisted drawing techniques and virtual reality walk-throughs.
Adirondack Design recently designed and supervised the completion of extensive renovations to Camp Topridge, originally the summer get-away for Marjorie Meriweather Post and one of the Great Camps of the Adirondacks. The main lodge acquired a new entrance, new kitchen and new windows, all of which maintained the character of the period during which the camp was originally constructed but ensured that the residents would be able to comfortably enjoy the property for years to come by incorporating low maintenance and energy efficient materials. In the "new" lodge, one is surrounded in natural charm and elegance without sacrificing warmth and comfort

From its inception, Adirondack Design has endeavored to keep up with tomorrow's technology by continually upgrading its computer enhanced design software. Additionally, we are able to communicate with our clients in person, and via phone, fax, modem and the internet. Our client base stretches from the Adirondack Mountains of New York to the wooded hills of Georgia and Alabama to the Colorado Rockies.

Even though the Adirondack Camp style has experienced an increase in popularity over the past several years, one of the biggest complaints about the Great Camps was that they were dark. Our designs use windows in clerestory and dormers to bring in as much light as possible. From the open living areas to spacious great rooms to cozy bedrooms, our homes are quiet, the thick log walls muffling sound from the outside or from other areas of the home. Over time, the appearance of these buildings improves as the patina of the wood comes out.

The biggest compliment to our firm upon the completion of a recent project was when the owner happened to overhear a passenger in a passing boat comment "say, look at that great old place!"

What is Adirondack Architecture ? PDF Print E-mail

Adirondack architecture dates back to the 1800's. William West Durant has been credited as being the originator of this style, having created rustic estates for wealthy clients in the 1880's. His use of native materials such as birch bark wallpaper and rustic details was then and still is well known. The style quickly spread through the Adirondack Park, and eventually throughout the country, evident in mountainous areas from the Appalachians in North Carolina as far west as the Rocky Mountains.

Theodore Roosevelt became acquainted with the Adirondack style as a child when he was sent to these mountains to help control his asthma. He recognized that the Adirondack style best harmonized the relationship of the woods with man-made structures. When he created the National Park system, he felt strongly that the structures to be built within those parks would also fit in with the environment by emulating the Adirondack style. The Inn at Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park is an excellent example of Adirondack architecture.
